It can be hard for you to get adjusted to wearing braces. Eating with braces can also be troublesome. Fortunately, there are several things that you can do that will make it easier for you to eat with braces.
Choose Soft Foods
It is best for you to choose soft foods. Soft foods are less likely to damage your braces. They are also less likely to cause irritation. Yogurt, cheese, soft seafood dishes, soft-cooked beans, pancakes, and smoothies are some of the best foods that you want to eat. Popcorn, hard taco shells, ice, chips, and raw carrots are some of the foods that you should avoid.
Use Dental Wax
Braces can rub against the insides of your mouth and cause irritation. Your mouth will eventually get used to the braces. However, while you are getting adjusted to the braces, you can use dental wax. Dental wax will help to eliminate irritation and mouth sores.
Rinse Your Mouth With Salt Water
Rinsing your mouth with salt water will also help ease irritation. You can add a half teaspoon of salt to warm water. The saltwater will treat sores and alleviate pain.
Change How You Eat
Not only will you need to change what you eat, but you will also need to change how you eat. Eating with braces will be a lot easier if you can cut your food into smaller pieces. For example, for food such as corn on the cob, you can use a knife to take the corn kernels off of the cob.
Chew With Your Back Teeth
Your teeth will likely be extra sensitive after you get braces. Your back teeth are better-equipped for chewing because they are bigger. Chewing with your back teeth can take the pressure off of your more sensitive front teeth.
Eat Slowly
It is best for you to eat slowly. Pain and inflammation are more likely to occur if you eat too quickly. You will also need to drink plenty of water while you are eating. This will make it easier for you to swallow. It will also rinse away food that may get caught up in your braces.
