Even in this day and age of fluoridated water and increased attention to dental hygiene, a majority of people will still need a dental filling at some point in their life. The procedure is fairly simple and straightforward, and it can go a long way in preserving a patient’s tooth. Curious about what happens when a patient needs a filling? Read on for more information.
Why Get a Filling in the First Place?
Dental fillings are used to repair teeth that have been damaged. The damage is usually caused by cavities, but repairs can also be necessary if a person injures their teeth by grinding them. A tooth that has been chipped or broken can also be fixed with a filling.
What Should a Patient Expect?
When a patient comes into the office, the dentist will first take X-rays of the tooth and describe the procedure to the patient. Next, the dentist will give the patient a numbing agent around the damaged tooth so that they may be comfortable during the treatment. When the patient is numb, the dentist will remove the tooth decay with a drill and install a filling. The patient is able to go home shortly after the procedure, even though their mouth will continue to feel numb for a few hours. Because numbness can cause the patient to bite their tongue or the inside of their cheek by mistake, it is recommended that they not eat until the numbness wears off. The dentist will give the patient instructions on how to care for their filling in the hours following the procedure.
What Kinds of Fillings Are There?
There are a variety of fillings a patient can choose from. These include:
Amalgam Fillings
In use for over a century, amalgams remain the most popular fillings. They are not expensive, but they are strong. This makes them suitable for molars. One drawback is that amalgam fillings are made of metals and are quite noticeable, which makes them not the best choice for front teeth.
Composite Resins
These fillings are made of a mix of quartz or glass filler and are quite long-lasting. Because they can be made to match the color of the patient’s tooth, they are good for front teeth and bicuspids.
Gold
Gold is one of the most beautiful, long-lasting, and expensive fillings. Because of its beauty, some people don’t mind having gold fillings on their front teeth. Another attribute of gold is that it does not tarnish.
Ceramic
This filling can also be tooth-colored and are most often made of porcelain. Because porcelain is clay that’s been fired at very high temperatures, it is very strong, tough, and resistant to staining. However, the downside is that porcelain filings are nearly as expensive as gold ones.
